Enemy of the People

“Well, I think that the dangerous, you know, edges here are that he is trying to undermine the media and trying to make up his own facts. And it could be that while unemployment and the economy worsens, he could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control exactly what people think. And that, that is our job.”

Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC

In the latest furor over President Trump’s comment that the press have become the “enemy of the people” one should remember that throughout the course of history, virtually every sector of civilization has, at one point or another, become an ‘enemy of the people.’

Popes, churches, kings, princes, emperors, aristocracies, Marxists, anarchists, terrorists, various militaries, surveillance cults, bankers, police forces, gangs, and even the once-hallowed professions of doctors (Big Pharma), priest (pederasty), and lawyers have turned exploitative.

Extending this into conditions, things like drugs, poverty, and inflation have all, at one time or another, been declared “enemies of the people.”

But somehow, despite decades of deception, false reporting, invented scandals, preferential treatment, corporate manipulation, obfuscation, propaganda, hype, ratings wars, under-reporting, over-reporting, and collusion with political campaigns…

We must assume the continued holiness  of the Press?

Bunk.

The Press are held to the exact same standards as every other institution.

The Press can keep the laws of their trade or break them just like anybody else.

It is naive, sanctimonious, and plain stupid to believe any human institution is magically immune from the darker motivations of human nature.

Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC seems wholly convinced your mind is hers for the shaping, and that she (and by extension the Press) have sole custody of your opinions. But of course, no one bats an eyelash at such presumptions. Like some celebrity scientists, the Press fancies themselves a new priesthood that is beyond reproach. Anything that pours from their poisoned lips is to be accepted ex cathedra.

And when the Press imagines the preamble to the Constitution of the United States starts with “We the Press…”

They too have become “enemies of the people” and are long overdue for some soul-searching, review of their ethics, and improvement in their character.
